Adams County DUI & Traffic Court Guide

Three different courts publish Brighton or Thornton addresses: Adams County Justice Center, Brighton Municipal Court and Thornton Municipal Court. The caption, charge and issuing agency—not the city name alone—identify the right clerk.

Do not rely on the city or county name alone.

The Adams County Clerk’s Office publishes a monthly midday closure on the fourth Wednesday. Verify any special closure or appearance instruction before traveling.

A Brighton location does not automatically mean Adams County Court.

The state Justice Center is at 1100 Judicial Center Drive. Brighton Municipal Court is at 3401 E. Bromley Lane. A Brighton police citation may identify either a city-ordinance matter in Municipal Court or a state-law matter in County Court. Follow the full caption and address.

Three destinations · separate authority

Start with the full caption before choosing a Brighton or Thornton court.

The county name, city of the stop and police agency can be useful clues, but none replaces the court name, address, case number and appearance instruction printed on the current paperwork.

Colorado Judicial Branch

Adams County Justice Center

The state Justice Center is at 1100 Judicial Center Drive in Brighton. Use its clerk when the papers name Adams County Court, Adams District Court, Adams Combined Court or the 17th Judicial District.

The Judicial Branch publishes separate main, records, collections and self-help contacts. When calling, give the complete case number and division. Its location page also publishes a recurring public closure from noon to 1 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

City of Brighton

Brighton Municipal Court

Brighton Municipal Court is a city court at 3401 E. Bromley Lane. The city says it hears alleged violations of Brighton ordinances, including municipal traffic, parking, animal and code matters.

A Brighton police citation does not become a municipal case solely because a city officer issued it. Brighton’s official materials recognize that city officers can write citations returnable to either Municipal Court or Adams County Court depending on the alleged violation.

City of Thornton

Thornton Municipal Court

Thornton Municipal Court is a limited-jurisdiction city court at 9551 Civic Center Drive. Its official page identifies municipal traffic, misdemeanor, parking, animal and code matters among its case types.

The court publishes Monday-through-Thursday public hours and says it is closed Friday. Its payment, filing, appearance and virtual-hearing procedures are municipal procedures; they do not govern an Adams County Court case.

Review Thornton Municipal Court →
Step A

Copy the caption

Write down “Adams County,” “Brighton Municipal” or “Thornton Municipal” exactly as it appears. Do not shorten the name to “Brighton court.”

Step B

Match the address

Justice Center: Judicial Center Drive. Brighton Municipal: Bromley Lane. Thornton Municipal: Civic Center Drive.

Step C

Confirm the setting

Use the official clerk or docket for that court to verify the current date, division and appearance method. A public stream is not permission to appear remotely.

Municipal procedures differ

Thornton and Brighton publish different appearance and payment instructions.

These details come from the cities’ current official pages. They help identify the process but do not advise whether to pay, plead, request a continuance or appear in a particular manner.

Thornton appearances

In person is the published default.

Thornton says court hearings are held in person Monday through Thursday. Its court is closed Friday. The city currently describes Monday-afternoon remote settings for people who establish a substantial hardship and obtain approval from the judge.

A motion to appear virtually does not itself change the setting. Thornton’s form says the matter remains in its current status until the court enters an order. Preserve the submitted request and watch for the actual response.

Check Thornton appearance instructions →

Thornton walk-ins

A walk-in period is not a substitute for every ordered date.

The official Thornton page currently says walk-ins are welcome Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m. It warns that people appearing on their ordered date may be heard first. The published process can change with the docket, a later order or holiday.

Before using a walk-in session, identify the case and confirm the current procedure with the municipal clerk. Do not assume that the same walk-in process exists at Adams County Justice Center or Brighton Municipal Court.

Verify Thornton’s live docket guidance →

Brighton remote requests

Virtual sessions are by request—not automatic.

Brighton’s Municipal Court page says virtual court sessions are available by request only and directs visitors to contact the court for more information. That statement does not turn an existing in-person instruction into a remote appearance.

Use the current municipal contact information, provide the citation or case number, and obtain confirmation from the court. An Adams County Justice Center case uses the Judicial Branch’s instructions instead.

Payment cautions

Use only the portal belonging to the court on the citation.

Thornton and Brighton each link to municipal payment tools. Brighton says its online lookup uses a ten-character citation number without spaces or dashes. Adams County Justice Center publishes separate state-court collections information and says telephone payments are not accepted.

Payment may have consequences for a record, points, insurance or commercial driving. This guide does not recommend payment or a plea. First verify the court, charge, deadline and what the paperwork says payment means.

Compare state-court collections information →

Separate calendars

A court date in Adams County does not protect a Colorado DMV deadline.

A DUI-related event can generate a state-court case and a separate administrative license matter. A municipal traffic case can also carry driving-record consequences. Keep every court and DMV document in its own timeline.

COURT

Follow the caption, division and current order.

The summons, complaint and later notices identify the court setting. A Thornton or Brighton city portal cannot update an Adams County Court case, and a state-court docket does not replace a municipal instruction.

Review the Colorado DUI court process →

DMV

Read license and testing papers independently.

The Colorado DMV—not the county or municipal clerk—administers hearing requests, restraints and reinstatement. The applicable response period depends on the triggering event and notice. Verify it without waiting for arraignment.

Common questions

Finding the right Adams County court.

Court information can change. Follow the individual paperwork and verify current details with the official court.

Are Adams County Justice Center and Brighton Municipal Court the same court?

No. Adams County Justice Center is the state-court location at 1100 Judicial Center Drive. Brighton Municipal Court is a city court at 3401 E. Bromley Lane. Use the complete caption and address printed on the paperwork.

Does every Brighton police traffic ticket go to Brighton Municipal Court?

No. Brighton’s official materials recognize that city officers may issue citations returnable to Municipal Court or Adams County Court depending on the alleged violation. Read the court name and address on the citation.

Are Thornton Municipal Court hearings automatically virtual?

No. Thornton’s current page says hearings are in person Monday through Thursday. A remote appearance generally requires a substantiated-hardship motion and judicial approval; the case remains set as ordered unless approval is granted.

What walk-in information does Thornton Municipal Court publish?

Thornton currently says walk-ins are welcome in person on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m., subject to the court’s schedule and priority for people appearing on an ordered date. Confirm the current procedure before relying on it.

Can Brighton Municipal Court hold a virtual hearing?

Brighton’s official page says virtual sessions are available by request only and directs people to contact the court. A request does not change an existing appearance requirement unless the court confirms it.

When is the Adams County Clerk’s Office monthly midday closure?

The Colorado Judicial Branch currently states that the clerk’s office is closed to the public from noon to 1 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Verify the live page for later changes or special closures.

Can an Aurora traffic matter be assigned to Adams County Court?

It can. Aurora crosses county lines and its official guidance directs some matters to a county court rather than Aurora Municipal Court. The printed court name, county and address control the next official contact.

Does resolving an Adams County court date also resolve a Colorado DMV deadline?

No. The court case and Colorado DMV administrative process are separate. Read and preserve every license or testing notice and verify its response instructions independently from the court date.

What can I visit near the Adams County courts?

Brighton’s official guide highlights the Brighton City Museum, Barr Lake, the Armory Performing Arts Center, local parks and community events. Verify current access and hours, and do not let sightseeing interfere with a court appearance or deadline.

Where can I find current Brighton-area dining information?

Brighton’s official attraction page links current community tourism information. Because businesses and hours change, confirm any restaurant directly before making plans.
